For family-friendly travel and modern utility, both the 2020 Ford Edge and Subaru Crosstrek have a lot to offer. But which crossover is the best option? Our comparison guide has the answers you seek.
Family-Friendly Transport: 2020 Ford Edge
Because of its status as a midsize crossover, the Edge can’t help but offer more passenger space than the subcompact Crosstrek. If you plan to take your family on some lengthy road trips, they’ll love the Edge’s reclining second-row seats and upscale options, like heated seats and leather upholstery.
As you climb the Subaru Crosstrek trim models, you’ll also find a range of luxury features. Optional features like the sunroof and premium audio system give your daily drive a stylish touch. But, when it comes to passenger space, the subcompact Crosstrek simply can’t compete with the midsize Edge.
Best Standard Lineup: 2020 Ford Edge
Every Edge comes standard with the features modern drivers crave, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. When you choose the Edge, you don’t have to pay extra for niceties like reclining rear seats and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The base Edge is also nicely equipped with safety aids – features like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking – to help you steer clear of danger.
By comparison, the entry-level Subaru Crosstrek is more sparsely equipped. It does include a 6.5-inch touchscreen (the Edge’s is 8 inches) and the aforementioned Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. However, safety aids are optional, and are only available for Crosstrek models equipped with the continuously variable transmission. Some Edge features, like the Wi-Fi hotspot, aren’t available on the Crosstrek at all.
Tows the Biggest Toys: 2020 Ford Edge
If you want to tow your boat along behind your new crossover, you’re likely going to need the Edge. With the proper equipment, this sporty Ford can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The Subaru Crosstrek is smaller and tows far less, maxing out at 1,500 pounds. It’s a fine choice if all you’ve got to tow is a Jet Ski, however.
Sportiest Standard Performance: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek
Like its fellow Subarus, the Crosstrek comes standard with all-wheel drive. This traction-boosting performance gear helps the Crosstrek maintain its grip on slippery pavement. When you’re taking sharp corners or speeding down winding highways, all-wheel drive also makes for a sportier performance.
Back on the 2020 Edge, all-wheel drive is available, though it’s not standard equipment. But you can add this performance gear on any Edge trim model, no matter which engine is under the hood.
It might not come standard with all-wheel drive, but the 2020 Ford Edge is our favorite of the pair. Ford’s midsize crossover delivers more interior space, excellent modern comfort, and easy-to-use tech features.
