With their do-it-all capabilities and surprising refinement, the 2020 Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 are two full-size trucks worthy of your garage. Which should you choose? Our comparison guide is here to help you select the truck that’s more your speed.
Modern Refinement: It’s a Tie!
The 2020 Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 are ready to wrap you in comfort. It’s easy to choose your own adventure, since both trucks are available in a range of cabin sizes and trim levels. The extended and crew cabin options offer roomy backseat space, so your truck can double as a family hauler. (Note that only the F-150 is available with the single-row regular cabin.)
Besides roomy, comfortable seating, these full-size trucks offer the full gamut of luxury features. Choose from a variety of leather upholstery colors for an upscale cabin that suits your personal taste. Options like heated and ventilated seats take comfort to new extremes.
Configure Your Performance: 2020 Ford F-150
With five engine options, the 2020 Ford F-150 does a better job of catering to individual drivers’ needs. The entry-level engine is a 3.3-liter V6 that’s ready for basic workhorse action with 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.
Should you decide you want both more power and greater fuel economy, the F-150 has two options for you. The turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine boosts output to 326 horses and 400 pound-feet of torque. But it’s also pretty thrifty, earning up to 22 mpg combined. The turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine also serves up a great balance of power and fuel economy, supplying 250 horses and 440 pound-feet of torque and earning up to 30 mpg on the highway.
The F-150 also has two engine options for drivers who require more power. For the classic trucking experience, check out the 5.0-liter V8 engine. It issues 395 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque and helps you haul max payloads. To achieve max towing capabilities, you need the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. Depending on which trim model you choose, the F-150’s top-of-the-line engine offers two outputs: either 357 horses and 470 pound-feet of torque or 450 horses and 510 pound-feet of torque.
Though they don’t appeal to quite as wide a range of drivers, the Ram’s three engine options are plenty capable. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V6 rated for 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. For more in high-powered trucking, upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8 engine. Its 395 horses and 410 pound-feet of torque help you move heavy payloads. The newly available diesel engine supplies 260 horses and 480 pound-feet of torque and helps you earn up to 26 mpg combined.
Tow and Haul More: 2020 Ford F-150
If you need to move heavy loads, the F-150 is your truck. It both tows and hauls more than the Ram 1500 can manage. Depending on body style and equipment, the F-150 can tow max loads of 13,200 pounds and hauls up to 3,270 pounds.
Although the Ram 1500 was recently redesigned with performance in mind, it still trails behind the F-150. This Ram truck can tow up to 12,750 pounds and haul up to 2,300 pounds, depending on the configuration.
Although both trucks deliver refinement in spades, the 2020 Ford F-150 is the stronger choice – both literally and figuratively. Choose Ford’s full-size truck to tow more, haul more, and better tailor your ride to suit your personal needs.
