The 2020 Ford EcoSport and Nissan Kicks are two subcompact crossovers that stand apart from the competition. Both offer cutting-edge tech features and modern cruising comfort at very reasonable prices. But which should you choose? Our comparison guide takes a close look at both.
Modern Creature Comforts
Modern Creature Comforts: 2020 Ford EcoSport
For the most in modern comfort, get yourself a 2020 Ford EcoSport. Inside, Ford’s subcompact crossover satisfies with its welcoming passenger space and supportive seat cushions. It’s the right choice for commuters, who will appreciate its easygoing ride and accommodating driver’s seat.
When it comes to comfort, the 2020 Nissan Kicks offers a good second-place showing. The cabin is respectably roomy, with plenty of space for passengers’ elbows and heads. This subcompact crossover also sets you up with a little extra cargo space (25.3 cubic feet to the EcoSport’s 20.9 cubes). However, seating isn’t as comfortable as in the EcoSport. Up front, the short, narrow seat bottoms can leave you wishing for more thigh support. In back, the seats are a little too upright for complete comfort.
Road-Friendly
Road-Friendly Tech: 2020 Ford EcoSport
When you’re cruising around, you want strong connectivity and an infotainment system that’s quick and easy to use. The EcoSport delivers both. Standard Wi-Fi connectivity not only bolsters your smartphone connection in a low-bar situation, but it also lets your kids connect devices at the same time. Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, standard on all but the base Explorer, includes an 8-inch touchscreen featuring intuitive, easy-to-use menus and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Nissan Kicks also comes standard with some modern tech features, including a 7-inch touchscreen and three USB ports. However, the Kicks loses points because its infotainment interface isn’t quite as intuitive, something that can be exasperating in traffic. Like the EcoSport, all but the base Kicks model comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Sporty Performance
Sporty Performance: 2020 Ford EcoSport
Of the pair, Ford’s subcompact crossover is the most fun to drive. Its responsive handling and well-defined steering are welcome on any trip. The base engine is a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder that delivers adequate speed with 123 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. The sporty SES trim model raises the stakes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 166 horsepower and 149 pound-feet of torque.
With the Kicks, you also get twist-friendly handling and a quick-acting transmission. However, the 2020 Nissan Kicks doesn’t offer an engine upgrade. Every trim model comes standard with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 122 horses and 114 pound-feet of torque.
