The 2020 Ford Edge and Ford Escape are two crossovers with a lot in common, from their family-friendly cabins to their powerful, yet efficient, performance. Knowing how they differ will actually help you choose the one that’s right for you. Our comparison guide is here to help you do exactly that.
Size Matters
Size Matters
In addition to performance, size is one of the things that most distinguishes the Edge from the Escape and vice-versa. The 2020 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover, giving passengers a little extra leg and elbowroom in both rows. The Ford Escape is a compact crossover, which means it’s great in a tight spot, including busy city streets. It may not be as big as the Edge, but, inside, the Escape makes the most of its interior space.
Interior
Interior & Comfort Features
Though they come in two different sizes, the 2020 Ford Edge and Ford Escape are both big on comfort. Seating is supportive and comfortable, with seating contours that offer long-term contentment. Both crossovers also offer luxurious extras, including leather upholstery, heated seats, and ambient interior lighting.
Technology
Technology
Here, the 2020 Ford Edge and Ford Escape have more in common than not. The Sync 3 infotainment system comes standard on the Edge. For the Escape, it’s standard on all but the base S trim model.
Sync 3 is easy to use, thanks to its intuitive menus and crisp, colorful 8-inch touchscreen. The system also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone integration technology that helps you stay connected with minimal distraction, displaying apps on the touchscreen and giving you access to your phone’s voice controls.
Power
Besides size, the biggest differences between the Edge and Escape are their powertrain options. The midsize Edge gives you a little more heft. Its base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. If you want a sportier performance, check out the Edge ST. Its exclusive twin-turbo 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine kicks up dust with 335 horses and 380 pound-feet of torque.
The 2020 Ford Escape comes standard with a brand new 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Its 181 horses and 190 pound-feet of torque offer more than enough output for a peppy ride around town. The Escape also offers an engine upgrade. This turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides extra on-road fun with 250 horses and 280 pound-feet of torque.
For green-minded drivers, the 2020 Escape is rolling out a new PHEV powertrain, which combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors for a total output of 221 horses and 155 pound-feet of torque.
Fuel Economy
Fuel Economy
The Edge might be more powerful, but the Escape is the thriftier crossover. With its PHEV powertrain, it earns up to 41 mpg combined (44 city/37 highway mpg). The Edge’s base engine is also pretty thrifty, returning up to 30 mpg combined (27/33 mpg).
Still, the 2020 Ford Edge does an impressive job of blending power and fuel economy. With its thriftiest engine, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the Edge earns 24 mpg combined (21/29 mpg).
Safety
As you may have suspected, the 2020 Ford Edge and Escape offer similar takes on passenger safety. The Ford Co-Pilot360 bundle of safety aids is standard equipment for both. It includes everything you need to stay extra vigilant, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. These crossovers also offer cutting-edge options, like adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist.
