Two of the bestselling compact crossovers on the road, the 2020 Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson have a lot to offer. Choosing between them can be tough, which is why we created this comparison guide. By the end, you’ll feel confident about the crossover that’s right for you.
Standard Technology
Standard Technology: 2020 Hyundai Tucson
The Tucson comes standard with a loveable range of infotainment features, making it our pick in this category. Its infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Hyundai’s crossover also treats you to a barrage of standard safety aids, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The base 2020 Ford Escape does come standard with a long list of high-tech safety systems – such as lane keeping assist, blind-spot warning, and pre-collision detection with automatic emergency braking. Though the base Escape S doesn’t come with Ford’s Sync 3 system or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, these features are standard on all other Escape models.
Sporty Performance
Sporty Performance: 2020 Ford Escape
Thanks to a redesign, the Escape is now 200 pounds lighter. And that means that it’s both easier to handle and more capable, getting up to speed in minimal time. The Escape also gets extra points for its powertrain options. The base engine is a turbocharged three-cylinder that gets you going with 181 horses. For a little extra oomph, check out the 250-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Then there’s the hybrid powertrain, which combines 200 horses with excellent fuel economy (see below).
Though the Tucson doesn’t currently offer a hybrid option, it does let you choose between the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a peppier 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Though the base engine makes 161 horses, enthusiasts will prefer the 181-horsepower engine upgrade. Either way, though, the Tucson isn’t quite as quick as the Escape.

Comfy Cruising
Comfy Cruising: 2020 Ford Escape
After an extensive redesign, the 2020 Escape is roomier than ever, making it the best choice for a family road trip. And there’s more to love, because Ford’s compact crossover delivers both plush, supportive seating and a smooth, refined ride. Options – like leather-trimmed upholstery, heated seats, and an upgraded sound system – make the Escape even more luxurious.
In the comfort department, the Hyundai Tucson also gets a lot of things right. It might not be as powerful as the Escape, but the ride is generally smooth and controlled. And, though it doesn't feel as roomy as the Escape, the Tucson serves passengers under 6 feet tall with plenty of head and legroom.
The 2020 Ford Escape is the complete crossover package – sporty, thrifty, and modern – trumping the Tucson at almost every turn. To test-drive Ford’s newly redesigned crossover, visit us at Jones Ford in the North Charleston area.
