With their excellent tech features and stylish cabins, the 2020 Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata know exactly how to compete for your attention. But if you can only choose one of these midsize sedans, which should you drive home? Jones Ford’s comparison guide takes a closer look.
Cool, Quiet Comfort: 2020 Ford Fusion
When it comes to comfort, Ford’s five-passenger sedan is our favorite. First of all, every passenger enjoys supportive cushioning and generous legroom. And the cabin remains quiet, even when you’re faced with wind and road noise. We’re also big fans of the optional dual-zone climate control system, which is quick to cool you down, even in the midst of a South Carolina summer.
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is a close second place. This sedan serves up sharp interior design and roomy, comfortable seating. The cabin remains relatively quiet in most situations. However, tire and road noise can sometimes intrude on your conversation.
High-Tech Driving: It’s a Tie!
When it comes to technology, the 2020 Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata reach a stalemate. That’s technically a good thing, as both sedans will impress you with their high-tech safety aids. Standard features include forward collision mitigation and lane keeping assist. And both models’ driver aids do a decent job of alerting you to danger without overdoing it.
We’re also fans of both sedans’ infotainment features. Ford’s Sync 3 system is easy to use, and it includes coveted Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Hyundai’s infotainment system also includes a responsive, intuitive touchscreen interface and the latest in smartphone connectivity.
Fun-Loving Performance: 2020 Ford Fusion
For a sportier ride around town, choose the Ford Fusion. This midsize sedan offers a variety of peppy engines, so you can select the one that’s as fast as you want to be. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is a nice choice; it gets you going with 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Add all-wheel drive to increase traction, helping you stick tight corners and maintain optimal performance on wet North Charleston roads.
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata might not offer all-wheel drive, but it does offer two fun-loving powertrain options. The quickest engine is the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which turns up the heat with 290 horses and 310 pound-feet of torque.
Efficient Commuting: 2020 Hyundai Sonata
While the Fusion feels sportier, the Sonata is actually the more efficient model. Depending on powertrain, this sedan earns up to 32 mpg combined (28 city/38 highway mpg). You can even choose a hybrid model that improves efficiency to the tune of 52 mpg combined!
Like the Sonata, you can buy either a regular, gas-powered Fusion or one with a hybrid powertrain, the Fusion Hybrid. The sporty Fusion SE engine does the best job of combining power with efficiency, earning up to 27 mpg combined. With the Fusion Hybrid, you can save even more money, thanks to EPA ratings of up to 42 mpg combined.
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is tech-savvy and efficient, but the 2020 Ford Fusion has a lot more on the agenda, including a punchy performance and a sleek, stylish cabin. To learn more, visit us at Jones Ford, your North Charleston Ford dealership.
