When you’re shopping for a new crossover, the 2021 Ford Edge and Chevrolet Equinox should both be on your shortlist. At first glance, they appear to have everything in common. But our comparison guide is here to help you sort out their differences.
Dynamic Performance: 2021 Ford Edge
Either of the Edge’s sporty engine options will help you beat the Equinox in a race. Standard on most trim models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (250 horsepower, 275 lb-ft of torque). But shoppers who want something a little sportier can check out the Edge ST, which features a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 (335 hp, 380 lb-ft).
The Equinox is slightly less powerful, and it doesn’t give you any options. Every model features the same turbo 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (170 hp, 203 lb-ft). Like the Edge, though, the Equinox offers optional all-wheel drive to enhance performance on light trails and icy pavement.
Fuel Economy: 2021 Chevrolet Equinox
The smaller Equinox has the advantage here. Front-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated to earn 28 mpg combined (26 city/31 highway). With all-wheel drive, those figures drop slightly, to 27 mpg combined (25/30 mpg).
The larger, more powerful Edge strikes a balance between speed and efficiency, even if it won’t save you as much money at the pump. This Ford crossover is at its thriftiest with the base engine and front-wheel drive, earning up to 24 mpg combined (21/29 mpg).
Passenger Space and Comfort: 2021 Ford Edge
Since the Edge is a midsize crossover, its cabin is roomier than that of the compact Equinox. If you need extra rear-seat legroom and cargo space (39.2 cubic feet compared to the Equinox’s 29.9 cubes), then the Edge is definitely the right choice for you and your family.
In addition to extra space, the Edge also offers five trim models with increasing levels of comfort. Move up the trim hierarchy for a classier cabin featuring leather upholstery, heated seats, ands a hands-free liftgate.
The Equinox might be the more compact of the pair, but it also puts an emphasis on modern comfort. Just like the Edge, it provides nicely shaped seats with generous padding. And its four trim models let you choose the level of luxury you prefer.
Intuitive Technology: 2021 Ford Edge
Both the 2021 Ford Edge and Chevy Equinox are handsomely equipped with infotainment features and driver safety aids. However, the Edge has a little bit more to offer, including a longer list of standard safety aids and a bigger touch-screen infotainment interface.
These crossovers come standard with user-friendly infotainment systems (Sync 4 for the Edge and Infotainment 3 for the Equinox). Compared to the Equinox’s 7-inch central touch screen, the Ford’s Sync 3 system comes standard with a bigger, 12-inch color touch screen. Both systems include modern smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Also, both crossovers come standard with driver safety aids to actively help you avoid costly accidents. Both models include forward collision mitigation systems, which can detect and oncoming accident and hit the brakes on your behalf. Their standard lane-keeping systems actively help you stay in between the white lines. The Edge also includes standard blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
Endnotes
The 2021 Chevy Equinox is an attractive compact crossover, but the 2021 Ford Edge is the friendlier option. That’s especially true if you’re looking for maximum passenger space and a fun-loving drive.
