Whether you’re shopping for a classic used Ford Mustang or a more recent model year, these pony cars are always charismatic. Oozing style and speed, Ford’s famous sports coupe gives you all the muscle you can handle at a highly attainable price. Our used Mustang buying guide takes a look at the used Mustang models you’re most likely to see at Jones Ford, your North Charleston Ford dealership.
Sixth Generation: 2015-Current Model Year
How is the sixth-generation used Ford Mustang different from previous Mustangs? Thanks to a new independent rear suspension, these muscle cars are as agile as ever. In addition to better handling — and a sportier ride on winding roads — this performance gear improves passenger comfort.
Besides driving better, the sixth-generation used Mustang cabin offers increasing comfort and more in modern technology. Ford used higher quality materials to outfit the cabin. Updated ergonomics give passengers more elbowroom. For a sports coupe, the front seats are surprisingly roomy.
Ford also updated this generation’s exterior styling, making the sixth-generation Mustang easy to spot. It’s the one with the more aggressive-looking front end and sleeker roofline. The grille is notably bigger, the nose more canted. And the side windows look windblown — they look more like the windows on an Aston Martin than those of any previous Mustang.
What’s under the hood? The latest Mustang introduces something never before seen on Ford’s pony car: a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This innovation was specifically designed to deliver both speedy Mustang performance and improved fuel mileage.
Besides this new EcoBoost engine, these used Mustangs also offer a 3.7-liter V6 base engine and a 5.0-liter V8 engine upgrade. The latter, found in used Mustang GT models, is the one you want for maximum muscle car performance. Depending on model year and equipment, the V8 engine cranks out up to 480 horses.
Fifth Generation: 2005-2014
Why choose the fifth-generation used Ford Mustang? These used sports coupes are definitely worth a look. Not only do they give you a great price on an all-American muscle car, but they also deliver exactly what you want in a Mustang: speed and style.
Beneath these hoods, you’ll find one of two engines. The base V6 is reasonably fast, pumping out 210 horsepower. But the 4.6-liter V8 engine is the one that provides true muscle-car performance, boosting output to 300 horses.
Fourth Generation: 1994-2004
Why you’ll love the fourth-generation used Ford Mustang: Like its fellow used Mustangs, these model years feature retro design cues, sporty style, and a quick performance. This generation was the first to include features like the passenger-side airbag, power driver seat, and tilting steering wheel on every model, creating a friendlier cabin environment for modern drivers.
